Denim is Forever: Tips for Looking After your Jeans

From their early days as being developed as a style of pants for prospectors during the 1850s gold rush, to their multiple style and colour options that are available to us today, jeans have been woven into the fabric (no pun intended) of our daily lives, being a piece of clothing that many people wear on a regular basis.

What makes them so popular?

There are a number of factors that make jeans such a popular piece of clothing throughout the world. One of the main factors is that they are durable and have been created to last. A good pair of jeans can last you many years, unlike other similar types of clothing that you might need to replace every 12 months or so, such as a pair of linen trousers.

They are also very affordable. Though the quality may vary from brand to brand, jeans are generally very strong and durable, and should last you a long time. In fact, a lot of people look at purchasing a pair of jeans as an investment, as they know they are going to get a lot of wear out of them.

Another great thing about jeans is that they can be worn with a variety of different outfits. Smart or casual – you can achieve all looks and styles with a pair of jeans.

Where can you find them?

The great thing about jeans is that they are widely available all over the world. They aren’t a piece of clothing that is only going to be available in a specific type of store.

You can find them in almost all clothing stores, as well as supermarkets, department stores and also street markets. There are lots of suppliers and stores all over the world where you can purchase them online, such as Freddy Wear, which offer a great range of top quality jeans.

Looking after your jeans

Jeans are something that usually get a lot of wear. They are a garment that can be worn to achieve many different styles and looks and are extremely versatile. Many people like to wear them frequently, until they almost feel like a second skin when they put them on.

However, jeans do need to be looked after, and there are several things that you can do that will help prolong the denim in your jeans, and to keep them in a condition that will allow you to get years out of them. Below we will take a look at some of the most common ways to keep your jeans in tiptop condition.

Wash them sparingly

For most people, washing your clothes after wearing them is a normal thing. Items such as socks, underwear, t-shirts and even shirts are deemed to be a one-time wearable piece of clothing before they need to be washed. Though it’s not always the case with all clothing, jeans are one piece that stand apart from others.

Many people advise against washing your jeans at all for the first three months that you have them. During that time you should be breaking them in gradually, loosening up the denim and the fit, so that each time you wear them, they become more adaptive to your shape.

Clean specific parts where needed

If you notice that your jeans have a coffee stain on them from when you were at the coffee shop a couple of days ago, then it’s a good idea to tackle that stain by spot cleaning it, rather than chucking the jeans into the washer.

Sometimes all you’ll need is a damp cloth to rub on the stain. If that doesn’t work, then try an old toothbrush with some mild soap. A few brushes with that will usually do the trick, and your jeans can be looking great again.

Air dry once you have washed them

Whether you’ve washed your jeans in the washing machine, or just done a little bit of cleaning on a particular area, when it comes to drying your jeans, you must air dry them.

Many people with a tumble dryer will simply throw them in with the other washing and dry them out that way. This is not the best thing to do with jeans, as it can affect the fit of them and even cause some shrinkage.

If you don’t have a garden or balcony to let them dry off outside, simply put them over a radiator (turned off) or chair and let them air out naturally.

Turn them inside out for machine washing

When the time comes to give your jeans a wash, and it will at some point, regardless of being told to never wash your jeans, then it’s a good idea to turn them inside out before putting them in your washing machine. Doing so will prevent potential colour loss and fading.

It’s also advisable to consider using a cold-water spin cycle, as this can provide some additional protection against fading and shrinkage.

Wear them with care

It does sound a little silly, but the way in which you wear your clothes will determine just how well they last. Denim in a durable and very strong fabric, due to the way the cotton fabrics are weaved, creating the diagonal pattern. However, it’s not invincible.

If you try to stretch them too much, you could cause them to rip. Rips in jeans are common across the knee areas, especially if the jeans are old and have been worn a lot. They are also prone to rip around the groin area if you are bending about in them, or doing something such as yoga or playing sports.

Some final words

However, and whenever you decide, to wash your jeans, just remember some of the suggestions that have been talked about in this article.

A good pair of jeans can last you many years, and if you are careful with how you wash them, as well as wear them, then there is no reason why you can’t be wearing them into the foreseeable future.
