How to Go About Choosing a Career When You’re Undecided

If you don’t yet know what your passion is in life, choosing a career can be really hard, but we’ll help you get closer to finding an answer here.

The unemployment rate in America has been falling recently, which is great news.

But it also means that competition for jobs can be quite fierce these days.

So it has never been more important that you get yourself out there and start job hunting.

But what if you don’t know what job you want?

Not knowing which career to choose can mean you get left behind in today’s job market. So read our guide to choosing a career to help you take those first steps in finding the job of your dreams.

How to Go About Choosing a Career When Youre Undecided

What’s Your Personality Type?

One of the first things to think about when choosing a career is what job would suit your personality type. And in order to figure that out, you need to know what personality type you are.

You can take personality tests online to figure out whether you are an extrovert or introvert, and whether you are perceiving or thinking.

Once you know your personality type you can think about jobs that would compliment it. For an example, if you are extrovert then jobs in hospitality could be right up your street. Whereas an introvert may be better suited to working in research.

What Are Your Goals?

Next, you need to think about what your short-term and long-term goals are.

Achieving the life of your dreams can mean different things to different people.

Think about whether a secure income is more important to you than creativity. Or whether you want to travel the world, or settle down and buy a property.

Some people have a fixed idea about where they want to be in 10 years time, and others don’t. And that’s fine too! But having a rough idea of what you want your career to bring you is helpful when choosing a job.

All of these goals can influence the type of career you should choose.

What Are the Options?

Working out which careers are realistic options for you is the next step.

Not all jobs may be available to you, depending on your education and location. But you can draw up a list of possible options for a career.

Do some research when you make the list of your options. Contact some potential employers to find out what their personal requirements are and what qualifications you may need.

Don’t go ruling out options until you know for certain you are not eligible.

Choosing A Career You Will Enjoy

One of the most important factors to consider when you are thinking about choosing a career is to find a job that you enjoy.

The people who are happiest in their careers are those that have found a job that gives them purpose and is fulfilling.

All jobs have their ups and downs but you are far more likely to stick at a job that you enjoy than one you don’t.
